iRobot, the leading global consumer robot company bets high on Robot adaption in India

Puresight Systems Pvt Ltd. is the Indian arm of the leading global consumer robot company, iRobot and acts as the exclusive distributor of visually-guided, connected vacuum cleaning robots and floor mopping robots in India, which are segmented into the Roomba and Braava product categories. At present, all iRobot products are available on Amazon.in and irobot.in as well as at showrooms present in Chennai, Bangalore & Ahmedabad.

The parent company, iRobot, was incepted in 1990 by MIT roboticist Colin Angle, Helen Greiner, and Rodney Brooks. Its award-winning Roomba devices are easy-to-operate vacuum cleaning robots that are powered by rechargeable batteries and its wi-fi enabled vacuum robots are Alexa and IFTTT-integrated for greater convenience and functionality.

A marketing veteran with more than fourteen years of industry experience in marketing commercial technology products, Pulak Satish Kumar is the COO of Puresight Systems Pvt. Ltd, the official distributor of iRobot products in India.

iRobot the world’s pioneer practical smart appliances and robots manufacturing brand. In this role, he spearheads the brand’s Indian business operations, managing the administration, product development, market analysis, finalization of strategic alliances, technology procurement, and pricing of products based on market fundamentals and business requirements.

Team IncubateIND recently met up with Pulak Satish Kumar and spoke to him about the future of robotics and its affect on job economy of India.

Tell us something about yourself and what are the flagship products offered by iRobot?

I have a professional experience of about 15 years, cross-industry. I have worked with companies like Voltas, Havells & Phillips in different capacity. The area of expertise covers sales, marketing, business excellence and business strategy. Presently, I am associated with Puresight Systems as Chief Operating Officer, and for the growth of iRobot products in India working on market penetration, channel development and increasing reach aiming higher top line YOY. Puresight Systems Pvt Ltd is the official distributor of iRobot products in India. The product range includes mainly floor cleaning robots named as Roomba & Braava.

Kindly briefly define – Roomba and Braava? How do they function?

Roomba is a series of autonomous robotic vacuum cleaners. Introduced in September 2002, Roomba features a set of sensors that enable it to perform its tasks. For instance, the Roomba is able to change direction upon encountering obstacles, to detect dirty spots on the floor, and to sense steep drops to keep it from falling down stairs. Roomba uses two independently operating side wheels that allow 360° turns in place. The Roomba units have a range of models with the 600 to 900 series (in India), which provide several different features, such as faster speed, separate sweep canister, 5x stronger vacuum, obstacle avoidance, or performance maps displayed via a phone app. However, some parts of the Roomba models are interchangeable between related models, allowing a mix/match of features, or switching into other units for longer battery operation.

Braava Mopping Robots are ultramodern floor cleaners that feature an ivory-colored, square-shaped robotic floor mopping device. Its unique design is further contrasted with a black, diamond-shaped glass that adds an exceptional depth to its visual appeal. Braava starts its cleaning action without the need for any manual programming. The user-friendly device is controlled using three buttons, i.e. Start, Sweep, and Mop, and tirelessly mops up to 210 minutes covering about 1,000 sq. ft. in a single go. Braava’s lean design further adds to its flexibility by enabling the device to cover unreachable regions, including under-bed and below-couch areas – resulting in immaculate overall cleaning.

Brief on iRobot’s background? What does Puresight Systems do for irobot in India?

iRobot is Bedford, Massachusetts based advanced technology company founded in 1990 by three MIT graduates. Puresight systems take care of sales, marketing, distribution & after sales servicing of the products.

Why do you think robotic vacuum cleaners will be successful in coming years?

The real differentiation that these robots brings to the customers is “Effortless Cleaning” as compared to the traditional way of cleaning, it gives you ease of operating it from anywhere as Roomba is connected device. As a customer you get more disposable time for yourself, better cleaned floors and HAPPINESS. The legacy of 25 years of robotic expertise itself embarks the USP of iRobot products.

What will happen in terms of job losses & skills as devices and robots takeover?

There is always an adjustment between supply and demand with invent of new technologies. The tendency is of the substitution effect and deployment of the available resource in a better way. Similarly, the iRobot products complement you to clean your floor more effectively and efficiently. The time that a user saves by using these products can be utilized somewhere else. This product helps you to ease up your day to day life and have more time for yourself, we should always remember that in the fast-growing day to day lifestyle, we have very limited pool of something – “TIME”.

What are your future and expansion plans for iRobot’s products?

We at Puresight Systems Pvt Ltd, have noticed the huge increase in demand of iRobot robotic vacuum cleaners over the past 2 years. We have grown more than double in last two years. By the year 2020 we would be growing more than 5 times, with a greater market reach. With regards to expansion, we plan to open more stores in metro cities like – Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad and Pune.

Tell us about the challenges you have faced till now in order of acceptance of the product or from the customers.

The biggest challenge is to educate & make aware the customers about effort less cleaning against traditional way of cleaning. The challenge is to reach to every customer who want cleaner floors & had wished for this type of product for themselves. But, with the invent of fast technology where reaching right TG is fast and easy, we are sure to see a big jump in this category by 2020.
